catabolicAlthough the body is infinitely more complex than the automobile engine, it may be compared to the engine because both require fuel to run.

The body's fuel is, of course, food.  For the body to use its fuel, the food must be prepared by the body and appropriately distributed.  This is done through the process of digestion and absorption.  The actual use of the food as fuel, resulting in energy, is called metabolism.

The body's preparation of its food begins with digestion.  Digestion is the process whereby food is broken down into smaller parts, chemically changed and moved through the gastrointestinal system.  The gastrointestinal system or digestive system consists of the body structures that participate in digestion.

Digestion occurs through two types of action -- mechanical and chemical.  With mechanical action food is broken up by the teeth.  It is then moved along the digestive tract through the esophagus, stomach and intestines.  This movement is caused by the rhythmic contraction of the muscular walls of the tract called peristalsis.

During chemical digestion, the composition of the food is changed.  Chemical changes occur through the addition of water and enzymes, and the resulting splitting, or breaking down of the food molecules.  This process is called hydrolysis.  Food is broken down into nutrients that the tissues can absorb and use.

The GOOD NEWS is that the entire process of digestion burns calories!

The unit used to measure the fuel value of foods is the kilocalorie or kcal, commonly known as the "large calorie" or "calorie."  In the metric system it is known as the kilojoule.  One kcal is equal to 4.184 kilojoules.

The number of kcal in a food is its energy value.   Energy values of food vary from one food type to the next.  One gram of carbohydrate yields 4 kcal, one gram of protein yields 4 kcal, one gram of fat yields 9 kcal.  The enegy values of foods are scientifically determined by a device known as the bomb calorimeter.

Energy foods are those that can be rapidly oxidized by the body to release energy and its by-product, heat.  Both carbohydrates and fats provide energy for the human body.  ONLY proteins can make new cells and rebuild tissues.  Proteins are the basic material of every body cell.

Consequenty, if you only eat protein for breakfast -- the body will use the protein for making new cells and rebuilding tissues and burn your stored fat for the energy that it requires to go about its daily activities.
